Altered nipple and breast-skin sensation is one of the more common effects of augmentation, because the surgery can stretch or affect the nerves supplying the nipple.
What can happen
- Increased sensitivity, numbness or tingling in the nipple or breast skin.
- Most changes are temporary and improve over weeks to months as nerves recover.
- In a minority, some change in sensation is permanent.
Influencing factors
Larger implants, certain incisions (such as periareolar) and procedures involving the nipple (like a lift) can carry a higher chance of sensory change. Discuss your individual risk with your surgeon, particularly if nipple sensation is important to you.
