The Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulates and inspects hospitals and clinics in England, including the private facilities where cosmetic surgery is performed. (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have their own regulators.)
Why the facility matters
- A registered, inspected facility has standards for safety, staffing and emergency care.
- If a complication arises during or after surgery, the right resources and protocols are in place.
- Day-case "clinics" without proper facilities are a warning sign for surgery under general anaesthetic.
How to check
You can look up a hospital or provider on the CQC website to see its registration and inspection rating. Ask your surgeon exactly where they will operate, and verify it. In Scotland check Healthcare Improvement Scotland; in Wales, Healthcare Inspectorate Wales; in Northern Ireland, the RQIA.
