The implant pocket is the space the surgeon dissects to hold the implant. Whatever the plane — over, under, dual-plane or subfascial — the pocket's size, position and precision strongly influence the final result.
Why the pocket matters
- Too large a pocket can let the implant move, rotate or sit too low (bottoming out) or too far to the side (malposition).
- Too tight a pocket can restrict the implant and affect shape.
- Symmetry between the two pockets is key to a balanced result.
Modern techniques
Careful, controlled dissection, attention to bleeding (to reduce haematoma) and no-touch technique to limit contamination all support a clean, well-positioned pocket. The pocket is as important as the implant itself.
