Any doctor in the UK can legally call themselves a "cosmetic surgeon", but only those who have completed recognised specialist training appear on the GMC Specialist Register. Checking it is the most important verification you can do.

What to check

  • The surgeon holds GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • They are on the Specialist Register in Plastic Surgery (the relevant specialty for breast augmentation), or are an appropriately qualified breast surgeon.
  • There are no relevant restrictions on their practice.

How to check

Search the surgeon's name on the free public GMC register online. The entry shows their registration status, specialty and any conditions. If a surgeon is not on the Specialist Register for plastic surgery, ask why and consider it carefully.
