If you have read older information about breast implants, much of it may be out of date. Implant design has changed substantially, and several of those changes directly affect safety, feel and longevity.

Stronger, multi-layer shells

Modern shells are built from several cross-linked layers of silicone elastomer, engineered to tighter standards for thickness and integrity. This reduces "silicone bleed" and improves rupture resistance compared with early designs.

More cohesive gels

Today's gels are cohesive — they hold together rather than behaving like a liquid. Highly cohesive ("form-stable" or "gummy bear") gels retain their shape even when compressed, giving more control over the final result and reducing gel migration if the shell is damaged.

Surface technology

Beyond traditional smooth and textured shells, manufacturers now offer micro-textured and nano-surface technologies. Surface type influences how tissue interacts with the implant and is an area of ongoing research, particularly in relation to rare complications.

Shape and lightweight options

Round, anatomical and ergonomic shapes, a full range of projection profiles, and even lightweight implants (which mix gel with microspheres to reduce weight) give surgeons far more options to match an implant to an individual.
