Microtextured implants use a finer surface texture than traditional "macro-textured" implants. The aim is to gain some of the tissue-interaction benefits of texturing while keeping the surface area — and associated risks — lower.
The rationale
Because BIA-ALCL risk appears to rise with surface roughness and area, manufacturers have moved towards finer textures. Microtextured surfaces are intended to reduce that surface area compared with aggressive macro-textures.
An evolving evidence base
Surface classification and risk are areas of active research and regulatory attention. If a microtextured implant is recommended for you, ask your surgeon to explain why it suits your case and what the current evidence says about its surface category.
