Not everyone who wants breast implants is a good candidate at any given time, and a responsible surgeon will say so. Suitability is about physical health, realistic expectations and timing.

General criteria

  • Physically healthy and a non-smoker, or willing to stop smoking well before and after surgery.
  • Fully grown breasts and a stable weight.
  • Realistic expectations about what surgery can and cannot achieve.
  • No untreated medical or mental-health conditions that increase risk.

Situations that need extra thought

Planned pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight fluctuation, certain medical conditions and some medications can all affect timing and outcomes. Existing asymmetry, very thin tissue or conditions such as tuberous breasts may change the surgical plan.

The role of consultation

Suitability can only be confirmed at a face-to-face consultation with a GMC-registered specialist, who will take a full history, examine you and discuss whether implants — or an alternative such as fat transfer or a breast lift — best suit your goals.
