Removing implants is sometimes the right answer to a complication — or simply a personal choice. Here we focus on removal in the context of risks; for the procedure itself see implant removal.
When removal is advised
- Significant capsular contracture or rupture.
- Serious infection not responding to treatment.
- Diagnosis or strong suspicion of BIA-ALCL.
- Symptoms a patient attributes to implants (BII).
Capsule removal
Whether to remove the surrounding capsule depends on the reason. Routine total capsulectomy is not always necessary, but is indicated in specific situations such as certain ruptures or confirmed BIA-ALCL. This should be an individualised, evidence-based decision rather than a default.
Afterwards
The breast usually looks smaller and may sag; a lift can restore shape. Discuss realistic expectations with your surgeon.
