Rotation is a problem specific to anatomical (teardrop) implants. Because their shape is not symmetrical, if the implant turns within its pocket the breast can look distorted.

Why round implants are immune

Round implants look the same whichever way they sit, so rotation does not change their appearance — one reason many surgeons favour them.

Causes and prevention

  • A pocket that is too large for the implant.
  • Early vigorous activity before tissue adherence (for textured implants).

Surgeons reduce risk with a snug, precise pocket and (for textured anatomical implants) avoiding early massage and heavy activity. A rotated implant that distorts the breast is usually corrected by repositioning at revision.
