Some implant issues appear not in the early weeks but years or decades later. Because implants are not lifetime devices, understanding long-term risks is part of informed consent.
Longer-term issues
- Capsular contracture, which can develop or recur over time.
- Rupture, becoming more likely the longer an implant is in place.
- Position changes such as bottoming out as tissues age and stretch.
- Late seroma or one-sided swelling, which must be investigated (see BIA-ALCL).
- The eventual need for revision or replacement.
Staying ahead of problems
Know your normal, report changes, keep your implant details, continue breast screening (telling staff about your implants), and consider periodic imaging for silent rupture. See long-term recovery and longevity.
