Knowing the shape of the whole journey makes each step less daunting. While details vary by person and surgeon, the path is broadly the same.
1. Research and reflection
Learn about your options, clarify your goals and budget, and check how to verify a surgeon's qualifications.
2. Consultation
A face-to-face assessment, implant planning and a full discussion of risks. Many surgeons recommend a cooling-off period before committing.
3. Preparation
Pre-operative checks, stopping smoking, arranging time off and help at home, and buying a supportive post-surgical bra.
4. Surgery
Usually a day case or one-night stay under general anaesthetic, taking one to two hours.
5. Recovery
Early rest, gradual return to activity over weeks, with swelling settling and implants "dropping and fluffing" into their final position over months.
6. Long-term follow-up
Self-awareness of changes, keeping your implant details, and periodic review — implants are not lifetime devices and may eventually need replacing.
