Textured implants have a deliberately roughened shell. The texture was developed to encourage tissue to grip the surface, helping to hold anatomical implants in position and, it was hoped, to reduce capsular contracture.
Why textured implants are used less now
The rare cancer BIA-ALCL has been linked predominantly to textured implants, with higher-surface-area textures carrying greater reported risk. Some macro-textured products have been withdrawn internationally, and use of textured implants has declined. The MHRA continues to monitor reports through the national registry.
What this means for patients
If you already have textured implants, the overall risk of BIA-ALCL remains low and routine removal is not generally recommended in the absence of symptoms — but you should be aware of the signs, such as late, unexplained swelling, and seek review if they occur. Discuss surface choice and its evidence with your surgeon.
