What base width is
Base width is the diameter of the implant where it sits against the chest. Your breast and chest also have a natural width, measured at consultation.
Why it comes first
An implant wider than your breast base can spill into the cleavage (risking symmastia) or under the arm; one too narrow can leave a gap or look unnatural. Matching width to your anatomy keeps the result proportionate and reduces complications.
From width to volume
Once width is set, the surgeon selects a profile and volume that deliver your desired look within that width. This is why two patients wanting the "same size" may need very different cc.
