Discomfort is expected after augmentation, but pain that is severe, persistent or appears long after recovery deserves attention.
Early pain
Tightness and soreness in the first days to weeks are normal as tissues and (with sub-muscular placement) the muscle heal. See pain after surgery.
Persistent or late pain
Ongoing or new pain can be due to capsular contracture, an implant problem, nerve irritation, or causes unrelated to the implants. Pain with swelling, firmness or a lump should be assessed promptly.
When to seek help
Contact your surgeon for pain that is worsening, one-sided, associated with swelling or skin change, or simply not settling as expected. Unexplained late changes should never be ignored.
